About Skowhegan State Fair
The Skowhegan State Fair is the oldest continuously running agricultural fair in the United States, established in 1818 — making it a living piece of American history. Held every August at the Skowhegan Fairgrounds along the Kennebec River, this nationally recognized fair has set the standard for agricultural exhibitions for over two centuries.
What to Expect
World-class livestock competitions across all species, championship ox and horse pulls (some of the best in America), harness racing, large carnival midway, major entertainment acts, 4-H and FFA exhibits, craft fair, diverse food vendors, and exhibits celebrating Maine agricultural heritage. The oxen and pulling competitions are among the most competitive in the country.
Visitor Tips
Skowhegan is in the heart of Maine's Kennebec Valley, about 25 miles north of Augusta. As the oldest fair in America, attending is a piece of living history. The pulling competitions are extraordinary — the oxen pull in particular is a uniquely New England spectacle. Allow at least two full days to experience everything.
