The Biggest Fairs in New York

One of the largest county fairs in North America, the Erie County Fair runs 12 days each August at the 275-acre Hamburg Fairgrounds. It set an all-time record of 1,238,456 visitors in 2019, and the 2023 fair — the last year organizers publicly reported a total — drew 1,125,347, making it the largest county fair in New York State.

New York's flagship state fair runs 13 days each late August into Labor Day at the state fairgrounds outside Syracuse. The 2025 fair drew 925,989 visitors, a 7% increase over 2024, though still short of its all-time high of 1,329,275 set in 2019 — known for its agricultural competitions and a headline concert series that has drawn grandstand crowds up to 49,000.

Held over six days each August at the 147-acre Dutchess County Fairgrounds, the fair drew more than 289,000 visitors in 2024 and generated roughly $2.8 million in county sales tax revenue. Widely regarded as the second-largest county fair in New York after Erie, it traces its roots to 1842, making it one of the state's oldest continuously run agricultural fairs.

Held over Labor Day weekend at the Rensselaer County Agricultural Society's grounds, the Schaghticoke Fair traces its origins to 1819, making it one of the three oldest fairs in New York State. Roughly 100,000 people were expected at the six-day 2024 fair, drawn by livestock shows, truck and tractor pulls, a circus, and national touring concert acts.

Held each Labor Day week at the Chatham fairgrounds, the Columbia County Fair marked its 184th year in 2025 with roughly 70,000 visitors over its six-day run — an increase over 2024. It combines traditional agricultural competitions with a full midway and grandstand entertainment, drawing crowds from across the Hudson Valley and Berkshires.
