The Yankton County Fair in Yankton celebrates the Mother City of the Dakotas — Yankton was the first territorial capital of Dakota Territory and remains a regional commercial hub at the Nebraska border, and the county corn and soybean farming and Lake Yankton recreation define a prosperous southeast South Dakota community.

Yankton Dakota Territorial Museum preserves the history of the first territorial capital. The Missouri National Recreational River between Yankton and Gavins Point Dam is one of the last free-flowing stretches of the Missouri. Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery produces millions of walleye fingerlings annually.
