About Kalawao County Fair
The Kalawao County Fair in Kalaupapa celebrates the world's smallest county by area — an isolated peninsula on Molokai's north coast that served as a leprosy (Hansen's disease) settlement from 1866 to 1969, where Father Damien gave his life ministering to the patients. Today the Kalaupapa National Historical Park preserves this poignant history for a tiny remaining community.
What to Expect
Expect a small community gathering with local exhibits, Hawaiian cultural demonstrations, and the deeply meaningful community spirit of one of the world's most historically significant and geographically isolated communities.
Visitor Tips
Kalaupapa is accessible only by small plane, mule ride down the world's tallest sea cliffs, or a strenuous hiking trail. The settlement's historic churches, cemetery, and Father Damien's legacy make this one of the most moving and historically significant sites in the Hawaiian Islands.
