Ben Hill County's seat of Fitzgerald was founded in 1895 by a colony of Union Army veterans who established the only city in the South settled by former Union soldiers, resulting in streets named for both Union and Confederate generals and a unique Blue-Gray heritage that has given this south Georgia city an extraordinary founding story.
