About Wrangell City and Borough Fair
The Wrangell City and Borough Fair in Wrangell celebrates one of Southeast Alaska's oldest continuously inhabited communities — the Stikine Tlingit people's ancient village of Shtax'héen Kwáan at the mouth of the Stikine River has been home to Indigenous communities for at least 10,000 years, and the community's remarkable garnet collecting tradition (young children sell garnets dug from nearby Garnet Ledge) defines a unique Alaska heritage experience.
What to Expect
Expect community exhibits, Stikine Tlingit cultural heritage displays, garnet mining demonstrations, commercial fishing industry exhibits, local food vendors, and the community spirit of one of Alaska's oldest communities.
Visitor Tips
Wrangell's Petroglyph Beach State Historic Site preserves over 40 ancient petroglyphs carved in the basalt by Tlingit ancestors. Garnet Ledge — where children hold the exclusive right to sell garnets under a deed from the 1900s — is one of Alaska's most charming traditions. The Stikine River's spring brown bear viewing at LeConte Glacier is spectacular.
