About Bethel Census Area Fair
The Bethel Census Area Fair in Bethel celebrates the hub community of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta — one of the world's largest river deltas, where Yup'ik Eskimo communities have lived for thousands of years, and where subsistence fishing for salmon, hunting of caribou and moose, and berry gathering define a way of life that sustains over 50 communities accessible only by air or boat.
What to Expect
Expect a community fair with Yup'ik cultural demonstrations, traditional dancing, subsistence food traditions featuring dried salmon and Eskimo ice cream (akutaq), arts and crafts vendors, and the remarkable cultural vitality of the Yup'ik people of the Kuskokwim.
Visitor Tips
Bethel is the largest community in western Alaska and the regional hub for the Y-K Delta. The Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center preserves and celebrates Yup'ik culture. The Kuskokwim River's king salmon run is one of Alaska's most important subsistence fisheries, supporting communities that have fished these waters since time immemorial.
